Bookticker, a new data-driven website for ebook deals, launched today. The platform uses metadata feeds from publishers to display new ebook deals in real time.
Bookticker specifically focuses on promoting bestselling titles with reduced prices, publisher-promoted titles and titles that’ve fallen in price without any promotion.
“We wanted to create a site that would promote publisher deals but also expose deals that consumers may not otherwise find,” said Founder Greg Aden. “We also wanted to generate deal visibility that was purely publisher-driven rather than the result of pressured discounting by the major retailers.”
Sharing your favorite passages from an e-book is pretty easy. Just highlight the text and click to share. But there’s a big difference between reading a passage and hearing it read by a great actor or passionate author. With an update to the Audible app coming out today, Amazon is trying to make it as easy to share audiobooks as it is to share e-books.

Nearly two-thirds of children will always want to read print books even though there are ebooks available. Literacy advocate and teacher Donna Rasmussen thinks this is because “We are tactile creatures. We will judge books by their covers and that’s okay,” she said. “We do many creative things with books we can’t with digital, like building a poetry out of book spines.”
Recent research conducted by BookTrust in association with the Open University revealed that 76% of surveyed parents found their children prefer print books for reading for pleasure and 69% prefer print books for educational reading. As for interactive e-books…
This week, Digital Book World held their annual conference on digital publishing in New York City.
This year the conference was buzzing about book marketing, data, and discovery, among other topics. And from SEO to author branding, many sessions focused on connecting with readers and increasing revenue.
Here are eight of our top takeaways from the conference.
1. Authors and publishers need to collaborate more on author branding.

“It’s these guys’ worlds. We just post in it and shop in it,” said New York University Professor Scott Galloway of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google at Digital Book World 2016. During a talk called “The Four Horsemen,” Galloway argued that these four companies are taking over the world and continually disrupting the publishing ecosystem.
More than 50 major players in the U.S. publishing industry are petitioning the White House and Congress to end the Cuba trade embargo as it pertains to books and educational materials.
Calling the book embargo “counter to American ideals of free expression,” the petition — endorsed by publishing companies, authors and agents — says “books are catalysts for greater cross-cultural understanding, economic development, free expression, and positive social change.”
Unless you’re a writer, I imagine you haven’t been paying quite as close attention to the publishing industry and all its weirdness as I have, and that’s a shame, because it’s been really entertaining. JZ Comment: Brilliant piece by Gene Doucette and I suggest this is REQUIRED READING by anyone in the publishing industry. It backs up comment and warning I have made on previous jimandzetta blog posts about so-called ‘falling ebook sales’. The Big 5 simply do NOT like the ebook market.
Sales of adult e-books dropped 22.0% in the month, compared to same period last year, according to figures released by the Association of American Publishers through its StatShot program.
JZ Comment: As with previous “falling ebook sales” reports, please always temper this news with the fact that these figures are ONLY from those who report figures. In this this case, only 1205 publishers of the AAP reported the figures that produced this report. With the huge ebook business generated by authors moving to self-publishing platforms it can’t simply be extrapolated from these reports that the entire ebook industry is seeing ‘plunging’ sales. It is highly likely that the ebook industry, as a whole, is seeing continued growth.

Although revenue at Barnes & Noble fell 1.8% in the third quarter, net income increased 11.2%. While delivering its latest earnings report, the retailer also said it is planning to open four new concept stores by April 2017.
